Primary Department
Curriculum
The Primary Department has eight classes staffed by fully qualified teachers who are assisted by the specialist teachers of the Secondary Department. Emphasis is placed on developing a high degree of proficiency in:
- Language
- Mathematics
- Religious Education
- Environmental Studies
- Expressive Arts
French is taught in Primary 6 and Primary 7 by members of the Modern Languages Department. Swimming lessons are provided on a regular basis for Primaries 4, 5, 6 and 7. There are also tennis lessons for the upper Primary Classes. Outings to theatres, art galleries and many other places of interest all form an integral part of the Primary Curriculum.
Assessment, Reports and Communication with Parents
Parents receive twice yearly reports on their child’s progress, followed by a Parents’ Evening, in both December and June.
The report issued in December is not only a summary report, but also contains marks for all subjects covered in class and a written comment from the teacher.
The final report in June comes in the form of a booklet with one or more pages allocated to each area of the curriculum. This report contains both marks, where appropriate, and a written detailed comment. Parents are asked to sign the last page of the report and return it to the School with their own comment, if they wish.
At the beginning of each academic year, parents are invited to a meeting at the School where the programme for the year is outlined by each class teacher and the School’s general policy on discipline, homework and uniform is discussed. This meeting also allows parents to meet the teacher who will be responsible for their child’s education throughout the new session. Parental co-operation in all areas is essential and Fernhill School prides itself on having a healthy relationship with its parents.
Parents are welcome to discuss their child’s progress at any time and can make an appointment to do so by telephoning the school office manager on 0141 634 2674.
Supervision
Primary children are supervised at all times. During the morning break and lunch period, all children are supervised by our team of Playground Assistants.
