House System

The Secondary Department is divided into four houses named after four famous Scots – Stevenson, Napier, Mackintosh and Kelvin. Each pupil is allocated to one of these houses upon entry to the school and remains in it during her time at Fernhill School. Each house is under the guidance of a House Mistress, a member of staff, and a House Captain who is appointed from the Fifth Year group.

A variety of activities in the school form the basis of healthy inter-house competition and points are awarded to pupils for participating, with extra points being given to the winners. At the end of the year, during the Final Assembly, various trophies are awarded for achievements in music, public speaking, chess, sport, games and swimming together with the coveted Governors’ Trophy. All of these are awarded as a result of participation in the House System, encourages community spirit, with each pupil playing an active part in the life of the school.

At the end of each month there is a House Assembly at which the points totals for the month are announced and the Monthly Badge is awarded to the pupil from each house who has gained the greatest number of points that month. At the Final Assembly, a Yearly Badge awarded to the pupil from each House whose participation in events throughout the whole year has been outstanding.
