| The textbook used in S1 and S2 is the Cambridge Latin Course Books 1 and 2. This is supplemented by worksheets for reinforcement and extension. By the end of first year all pupils should be able to translate accurately using present and imperfect tense verbs and nouns from declensions 1-3. They will also have acquired knowledge from class work and research about different aspects of the Roman World in particular life in Pompeii around the time of the eruption of Vesuvius. By the end of S2 pupils should be able to translate correctly using present, imperfect, perfect and pluperfect tense verbs and nouns from declension 1-5. They will also have had practice in composing simple texts in Latin on subjects ranging from themselves to Disney cartoon characters and nursery rhymes. Pupils frequently start the S3 course around April of their second year. Regular homework is given to consolidate and extend classroom based work. This also affords parents an opportunity to gain an insight into what the pupil is learning and show how she is progressing with coursework. Homework takes the form of learning vocabulary, grammar or translating passages of Latin. Where a pupil fails to return homework or complete it satisfactorily, she will be asked to obtain a parental signature in her jotter adjacent to a note from the class teacher. |

Pupils study the Intermediate 2 Course which consists of two main areas of study – Translation and Interpretation and the emphasis is on acquiring skills in these two areas – the skills of translation and interpretation.
Translation: pupils consolidate all grammar taught in S1 and S2 and then complete the remaining 3 books of the Cambridge Latin Course. Thereafter they will translate texts from Roman authors which have been adapted to suit their level of competence. The Interpretation unit involves the study of verse and prose texts, some in original Latin and some in English. The texts studied are Cicero “In Verrem” and Vergil “ Aeneid”. The course is assessed by a combination of internal assessment set by the SQA and marked by the class teacher, and an external assessment set and marked by the SQA. To achieve a course award pupils must pass the internal and external assessments. Homework is given on a regular basis to consolidate and extend class based work. This takes the form of learning grammar rules and tables and the translation of the prescribed text. Work is also given on the interpretation of texts and questions from Past Papers. At this stage all work will be corrected by the class teacher. Parents will be informed where a pupil fails to complete homework or does not complete it to the best of her ability. |

Pupils study the Higher course in S5 and S6. The Higher grade consists of two areas of study – Translation and Interpretation.
Translation – All grammar (with the exception of Gerunds) will have been taught during the Intermediate 2 Course. Consequently, the Higher course develops and extends the translation skills and enables pupils to translate much more testing passages of Latin. Interpretation – Two passages are prescribed by the SQA, one on poetry, the other on prose. The skills of interpretation already developed in the Intermediate 2 course are developed and extended. Translation and Interpretation are assessed and marked internally using assessments provided by the SQA. Pupils also sit a final examination which is set and marked externally by the SQA. In order to achieve an overall course award in Higher Latin, pupils have to pass both the unit assessments and the final examination Regular homework is given to consolidate and extend classroom based work. At this stage all work is corrected by the class teacher. Parents will be informed where a pupil fails to complete homework or does not complete it to the best of her ability |
