The English Department aims to provide an environment where excellent teaching and learning takes place. The welfare of the pupil is at the heart of all we do and, to this end, the values and principles that lie at the heart of A Curriculum for Excellence have been embedded into the department.

 S1/S2 Syllabus:
Literary Study-
Pupils read a selection of Poems, a Novel /Short Story and all take part in the Reading   Certificate Award Scheme.                                 
Language Study-
Pupils practise the skills of Close Reading to hone their Language skills, skimming, scanning and reading independently for information.
Writing-
Pupils practise a variety of types of writing based on Units of Work including Personal, Descriptive and Imaginative Writing.
Talk-
Pupils participate in a variety of Group Discussion and Solo Talks based on the work of the class to express themselves and to build up their confidence.
                                       
S3 Syllabus:
Intermediate 1 English:
Language Study-
Pupils build on their existing skills through Close Reading practice to further hone language skills and raise their level of Reading skills.
Literary Study-
Pupils study a selection of Poetry, Prose and Drama culminating in Critical Essay assessments.
Personal Writing-
Pupils write an essay to demonstrate their skills in Discursive/Personal/ Creative Writing.

S4 Syllabus:
Intermediate 2 English:
Language Study-
Pupils build on their existing skills through Close Reading practice to further hone language skills and test the level of their level of Reading skills. (NABS)

Pupils study a selection of Poetry, Prose and Drama, culminating in Critical Essay assessments. (NABS)

S5 Syllabus:
Higher English:
Language Study-
Pupils practise a selection of Close Reading and Textual Analysis papers to hone their skills in language and to test the level of their Reading skills. (NABS)
Literary Study-
Pupils study a selection of Poetry, Prose and Drama culminating in Critical Essay assessments.(NABS)
Folio -
Higher Writing - 2 pieces of different genres
Personal Writing-
Pupils write an essay to demonstrate their skills in Discursive/ Personal/ Creative Writing.
 
S6 Syllabus:
Advanced Higher English:
Literary Study-
Pupils study a selection of Literature covering the genres of Poetry/Prose/Drama with a view to analysing critically the work of a chosen writer and to being assessed.(NAB)
            
Textual Analysis-
Pupils continue to hone their skills in the area of Language with a view to analysing critically a substantial piece of writing and to being assessed in this area. (NAB)
Dissertation-
Pupils make a study of a several novels, short stories or poems to submit to SQA as part of the external assessment.
 
Learning Support:
We aim to identifypupils who need additional support as early as possible and liaise with Learning Support to give appropriate provision to meet the needs of the pupil.
Homework:
Given regularly as extension work of the class, consolidation of classwork and reading.
Extra Curricular Activities:
Poetry Competitions /Writing Competitions/Poetry Club/Public Speaking Club/Visits to the theatre.
