Fernhill School is a Catholic School and the majority of its pupils are Roman Catholic. As a Catholic School, we have placed Christ firmly at the centre of our community, and His Commandments to love God and our neighbour inform everything we do. During their time at Fernhill, pupils are given the opportunity to know, love and serve God
Religious education forms an important part of the work of every class in the school, both primary and secondary, where all pupils are given the opportunity to learn about God and Christ. Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation is an integral part of the primary curriculum and these are celebrated in our local community at St. Mark’s Church, Fernhill.
Pupils are given many opportunities to deepen their relationship with God. The children participate in daily prayer, and regular religious assemblies are held in both departments. Pupils prepare and deliver many of these assemblies. Masses are held on occasions of holydays of Obligation and at times of importance in the lives of the Church and of our pupils, and active participation is encouraged in these. In consultation with the chaplain and members of staff pupils take responsibility for the preparation of class and school Masses. Eucharistic Adoration is held each Friday at lunchtime and is attended by staff and pupils alike. The spiritual development of all pupils in both primary and secondary is also aided by attending retreats and conferences organised by the Diocese of Motherwell and by other Catholic organisations.
Service of God and our neighbour forms an integral part of our life at Fernhill School, and pupils are encouraged to put their faith into action. The Gospel values of respect for others, tolerance, compassion, honesty, justice and forgiveness are presented to our pupils as ideals of Christian behaviour for which they should strive in their relationships both within and outwith the school. We involve ourselves in a wide range of charity work including support for the work of pro-life, Lepra, SCIAF, St Vincent De Paul society and Scottish International Relief. We view this work as an important part of the development of our pupils as responsible, caring citizens.
