introduce the pupils to such sports as tennis, badminton, skiing and swimming which they can continue to enjoy long after they have left school.
Hockey and netball are the main sports for all girls in the Secondary Department with volleyball being played indoors in bad weather. Hockey is played every Saturday morning, August to December, weather permitting, and the girls compete against other schools throughout the season. Girls chosen to represent their school in this way are expected to make this a priority and to give it their wholehearted support. Girls have the opportunity to attend a seven day hockey camp during the summer holidays.
All pupils in P6—S1 receive swimming lessons on a regular basis as part of the Physical Education course. The Swimming Gala is held in the second term and pupils from Primary 4 to Third Year participate in a variety of events. Parents attend the Gala and form an encouraging audience for the pupils. Pupils also participate in swimming competitions organised outwith the school and many compete at district level.
Our Ski Trip takes place during the Easter Holidays and we usually travel to Italy to enjoy the snow. The trip consists of 6 days of skiing with 4 hours ski tuition each day for girls in S3 and S6. We are joined by a growing number of parents who continue to come after their children have left school!
During lunchtime, there are organised games for pupils in the grounds of the school. Our senior students work with younger children in a variety of activities.
The spirit of teamwork and care for others is developed through this provision which is a fundamental part of Fernhill School. Organised physical activity is encouraged for all pupils and we are extremely fortunate to be able to make use of our extensive grounds during lunch and break times.

Our pupils enjoy a safe and secure environment where structured play is a critical part of their development. The Infant Classes are provided with a wide range of activities which help the children to learn effectively through play. At all times we encourage a healthy lifestyle and the collaboration involved in effective teamwork from the youngest age.
