Support for Pupils

At Fernhill School we give individual care and attention to every child. The size of the classes and the school ensures that the staff truly know each child in their classes. We provide support for pupils in their learning, personal and spiritual development.

Pastoral Support

The class teachers in Primary and Form Teachers in Secondary provide first line pastoral care for the children in the school. The Senior Management Team have overall responsibility for the pastoral care of pupils as follows:

Primary 1-7 Mrs E. Whyte, Head of Primary

Secondary 1-6 Mrs B. Roarty, Depute Head Teacher

There are three Principal Teachers of Support for Pupils who have responsibility across the whole school for main areas of support.

Support for Learning

Mrs D. McPherson provides support for pupils who are experiencing difficulties in their learning. She helps the staff to provide appropriate teaching methods, materials and strategies for pupils in classes throughout the school. The support in this area is also delivered through peer support from our senior pupils who work with younger children in their class work.

Health Education

Mrs L. Mooney is responsible for our health programme which aims to ensure that our pupils receive a comprehensive education about healthy lifestyles. The programme is wide ranging and is focussed on the needs of the pupils at every stage of the school. Our Health Awareness Week is held at the end of May and finishes with the School Sports Day.

Positive Behaviour

Mrs B. Devine has responsibility for our programme on the promotion of positive behaviour. This area of pupils support is wide ranging from the fostering of a culture of celebrating success to anti-bullying education. The work completed throughout the school, ensures that our children are allowed to achieve their full potential in an environment which is truly appreciative and supportive of their endeavours.

We believe that the support provided for our pupils will ensure that they are allowed to thrive and develop their talents to the full.
